I create art as a way of gifting myself acceptance, of working through the experiences I’ve
had as a mum and as a woman to arrive at a place of saying: yes I am enough. So what I
am looking at are feelings of freedom, of exploring innate identity verses socially
constructed identity versus familial identity and I’m saying to the viewer I validate you, I
see you and in some capacity I understand you. We have shared experiences therefore
we have a shared story.
And that’s all I can really ever hope for as an artist. To see and be seen.

Sarana Haeata is a Maori-Australian artist who resides in Margaret River, West Australia. From her studio Sarana Haeata explores the beauty and nuances held in shared stories, collective and individual identity, with a particular focus on the female experience. Heavily influenced by the joy and challenge of motherhood, her work across painting, digital media, ceramics and public art is often imbued with a sense of surrender and freedom.
Her work explores internal landscapes through gestural brush strokes, iconography and written word. Sarana cites her colour palettes as the most prominent emotional vehicle, using colour to instil calm or a sense of rich, enveloping wonder. Sarana’s artworks are visual acceptance letters, holding the viewer in a moment of belonging.
